How It Works

Driven by Passion

As an American who successfully secured Italian citizenship, I know firsthand how overwhelming the process can feel. I didn’t know where to start, which documents mattered, or how to prove I qualified. The information was scattered, inconsistent, and often confusing - and one small mistake could mean months or years of delays.

What began as a personal journey to reconnect with my Italian roots quickly became a lesson in how inaccessible this process can be without the right guidance. I learned that too many people give up not because they’re ineligible - but because they don’t have a clear path forward.

That is when I found Italian Citizen Assistance (ICA) where experience was made simple, streamlined, and transparent.

Together, with ICA, our mission is to simplify the process, remove the guesswork, and guide others with clarity, transparency, and confidence—so you don’t have to navigate it alone.

Step by Step

Understand Your Path To Citizenship

Most people fall into one of these paths:

  1. Citizenship by descent (jure sanguinis) – you may qualify through an Italian ancestor if the “citizenship line” wasn’t broken (commonly by naturalization timing).

  2. Citizenship by marriage – based on marriage to an Italian citizen (separate requirements like language and waiting periods).

  3. Citizenship by residency / naturalization – after legally residing in Italy for a qualifying period.

Do an eligibility “intake” with Roots in Italy

Provide the following details in our Eligibility Intake Form:

1. full legal name, DOB, place of birth

2. Your direct line of descent (you → parent(s) → grandparent(s) → Italian ancestor)

3. Key dates/places for each generation (birth, marriage, death)

4. Any known naturalization details for the Italian-born ancestor (if they became a citizen elsewhere, when and where)

Eligibility Review & Document Roadmap

In partnership with ICA, your eligibility for Italian citizenship will go into review.

What to Expect at This Stage:

  1. Review of your lineage and flags legal or documentation issues

  2. Conducts genealogical research and secures vital record requirements

  3. Manages certified translations and apostilles/legalization

  4. Prepares applications for consulates, comuni, or courts

  5. Guides you through every step through submission and beyond
